Climate
Climate change causes increasingly intense rainfall with rising water levels. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare Kolding Municipality for climate changes in order to avoid flooding and destruction.
There are more than 2,200 kilometers of sewer lines running below Kolding Municipality. These pipes must not only divert wastewater from approximately 34,500 households and numerous businesses in the municipality. In many places, they also handle the rainwater from rooftops, roads, and other areas. Most of the sewer system was constructed many years ago when it did not rain as much and as heavily as today. Another challenge is that many older properties have installed paved driveways or extensions that channel more water into the sewers. Therefore, the pipes are often too small to handle the increasing water levels.
We cannot simply dig up 2,200 kilometers of pipes and lay down larger ones. However, the water must be directed away in order to avoid flooding roads, gardens, and basements. We are working in various ways to ensure this, and you can read more about some of the projects here.
